Obesity and the vitamin D–deficiency condition osteomalacia often go hand in hand. Osteomalacia is characterized by deep bone and muscle pain and weakness. Excess body fat absorbs and holds on to vitamin D — from both sun and diet — so that it can’t be used for bone building and cellular health.
A difficult cycle can begin: the bone and muscle pain from osteomalacia makes physical activity nearly impossible, which can lead to more weight gain, which in turn worsens vitamin D status and the osteomalacia.
Breaking the cycle
Treating a vitamin D deficiency can relieve osteomalacia and make movement possible again. Research suggests exposure to UVB radiation — from the sun or from artificial sources such as tanning beds — is one way to raise vitamin D levels.
There may be other benefits, too. Studies have shown that being vitamin D deficient can interfere with leptin, a hormone that signals the brain when you’ve eaten enough. Restoring healthy vitamin D levels may help restore that process.
A balanced view
